Installing owl boxes

The project submitted by Nant-Isa for the Test & Trial was to install two owl boxes on their holding. They are passionate about conserving owls and encouraging breeding to help the population status. The boxes installed are for Barn Owls.

There are 5 owl species in the UK; the barn owl, tawny owl, little owl, long-eared owl and short-eared owl. Although they are not endangered, their loss of habitat in the UK due to industrialisation and some agricultural practices is concerning for these species and they are considered vulnerable.

Owls can provide lots of benefits for farmers. For example, they can reduce the need to apply pesticides because their diet consists of insects and small mammals.

Nant-Isa will measure the success of the project by monitoring the nest boxes regularly and noting the presence or absence of owls in the boxes.

We are grateful to Brook Vessons Farm, another participant in the Test & Trial, for making these boxes.
